This Sunday at 10 pm, you can watch episode two of the new HBO series How To Make It In America. The first episode reminded me of a toned-down Entourage, which is not that surprising considering Mark Walhberg is an exec producer. They’ve teamed up with the folks at Foursquare to create a Foursquare badge that you can unlock at the following NYC restaurants and retailers, which I guess may be set to appear in future episodes of the show or simply exude the attitude of the show’s characters. Make HTMIIA your Foursquare friend, then check into any 3 of 20 possible New York nightlife or dining destinations. List courtesy of Eater.com.
If you’ve found yourself here wondering what Japanese restaurant Rachel told Ben he needed to move on with his life at in Episode 2, my best guess is Shima Japanese Restaurant, a 2nd Ave mainstay. The only clue I have besides the vague description “that sake place on 2nd Ave” and my understanding of the HTMIIA as a downtown kind of crew are the interior shots of the restaurant, and while I haven’t been to Shima, it seems the most likely fit since none of the Japanese restos below are actually on 2nd Ave.
If you’re looking for the Mexican restaurant where Rachel had her birthday party, it was La Esquina in SoHo.

Make HTMIIA your Foursquare friend, then check into any 3 of 20 possible New York nightlife or dining destinations (restaurants are the new nightlife, you know), and you’ll get the shiny new Foursquare badge pictured here. Frankly, eating or having a drink at the impressive list of venues is reward enough! But playas play on.

Last Thursday, I spotmarked for Videofashion at the Erin Wasson x RVCA show during New York Fashion Week. The runway was constructed of oriental rugs laid out around seating areas filled with antique-looking chairs and chaises and gigantic mountains of stacked rugs at ABC Carpet and Home on Broadway and 19th. The venue was gorgeous, filled with chandeliers and expensive furniture, and very original.
I got to the show two hours before the supposed start time of 8 pm to mark out and guard the spot for the cameras until the crew arrived from the Olivier Theyskens book signing. For those two hours, I was entertained by the synthpoppy wailings and catchy beats from the Brooklyn band Yeasayers. Imagine Owl City plus Vampire Weekend with drawn-out vocals, or as they say on their MySpace page, “Enya with BOUNCE.” (I really don’t know what that means.)

Erin Wasson supporters showed in full force: a pantsless Ke$ha was accompanied by a protective Joe Zee, Jared Leto looked awfully warm in a skull knit winter hat, French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld’s son Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld appeared coolly disinterested, but not bored (how does he do that?), and Margherita Missoni (I totally missed her) was adorable in a fedora and vintage-y floral dress. To be frank, I’m terrible at picking out famous people so I count on the swarms of photogs to guide my eye, and even then I usually fail to identify the subject.
The show started an hour late at 9 pm and lasted for 15 minutes or so, possibly less. Good thing there was champagne and a live band. 22 “Alabaster”-themed looks hit the runway, but like Style.com, I found the clothes themselves to be the least interesting part of the event. Erin Wasson as the anti-supermodel-turned-designer is enviably cool. The makeup was prettily quirky (one feathered eyebrow), but the crimped and braided prairie girl hair looked like it came straight out of the Urban Outfitters catalog, and the clothes looked like stuff I can already buy at UO. Don’t get me wrong: I love UO. But if Erin Wasson wants her collection to sell for 3 times the price of the pieces at UO, the clothes better look like they’re worth it, and apart from a glam jacket or two, they didn’t. Watch tribute videos to Lee Alexander McQueen from Videofashion and highlights from Autumn/Winter 2010 Fashion Week designer collections at VideofashionDaily.com.
It’s officially the first day of New York Fashion Week but the untimely death of British design icon Alexander McQueen has cast a dark shadow over the usual festivities and brouhaha. McQueen, 40, was found dead in his home this morning after having hung himself. Three days after the death of his mother, and three years after the suicide of his friend and mentor Isabella Blow, McQueen succumbed to his own inner demons.
This is a man whose designs are known the world-over as showstoppers, a man who was universally respected for his talent, inventiveness, showmanship, and ingenuity in fashion. (I am especially sad for the Puma and Alexander McQueen collaborations that will be no more. At least I’ll always have his London Biker sneakers.)
The world is atwitter with RIPs, tributes, and remembrances. Click through to see his life and career in pictures.
What are your favorite McQueen looks? The man knows how to make an impression, that’s for sure. Thandie Newton’s dress at the 1998 BAFTAs (gorgeous!) and the ring of fire (not so much for the outfit as for the theatrics) are up there in terms of memorable McQueen moments for me.
If you can find it, you should watch the two-part Designer Marathon programs (48 minutes each) on McQueen by Videofashion. Click through for McQueen in his own words, as told to the producers of Videofashion.

Think Hulk goes Gladiator and you get the Planet Hulk movie. Hulk gets rocketed into space by the Illuminati, a group of heroes who consider Hulk too dangerous to stay on Earth. Hulk crashes onto the planet Sakaar, where the Red King reigns by terror and force. Hulk is captured and becomes a gladiator in the arena of the Red King, where he and his fellow gladiators battle it out for their freedom. Lives are lost along the way, and Hulk goes from selfish brute to protector and rebel leader.
I liked it. Granted, I never read the Greg Pak comic book upon which the movie was based, so I am clearly not a stickler for authenticity. That said, I liked the characters and I liked the storyline. It wasn’t a terribly original storyline, but it took choice bits from different stories and wove together a new one.
I won’t spoil the story for you, so you can watch the trailer for yourself here.
I’ve never watched NBC’s The Biggest Loser, save for a few commercials here and there where you see the trainers torturing their assigned contestants with push-ups and rope-tugging and whatnot. But somewhere in the sea of information that is Facebook, a friend commented that thanks to Jillian Michaels’ workout videos, she was so sore she was having trouble chasing around and picking up her baby. A normal person might think, gee, that sounds awful. I thought, hey, I could use a workout at home that helps me burn off some of the calories from the rich, fatty three-course meals I’ll be having for NY Restaurant Week.
So I started working out to Jillian’s 30 Day Shred, No More Trouble Zones, and a few other videos (hers and Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease and MTV’s Yoga and Pilates) in the comfort and privacy of my own home so I could be a Big Loser, too, and I’m loving her. She’s actually not a raging exercise nazi, which was the impression I got from my limited understanding of her role as a raging exercise nazi. She encourages without babying, and she pushes without making you feel like a worthless tub of lard.
I like to do the 30 Day Shred in the mornings before work. There are three levels, each around 20 minutes long. On lazy days, I do the 25 minute Level I workout; on more ambitious days I go for the 20 minute Level II workout. I haven’t attempted Level III because I’m fairly certain I would need to be airlifted to the hospital first, and that would make me late for work. When I think to myself, it’s just 20 minutes, I can be showered in done in 30 minutes, it’s easier to commit to than a full hour workout. (more…)

Saw a link to this video on how to get Lady Gaga’s freakishly large googly eyes from the Bad Romance music video on Racked. After watching the how-to video, I must admit I am thoroughly intrigued. Will report back after buying four sets of false eyelashes.

From Videofashion Daily, the new Alexander Wang and Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2010 collection videos.
Can’t say I love the cheetah-print mules or the backless knee-high socks at Alexander Wang, but I do like the flouncy patterned shorts and long vests. Love the x ankle strap shoes and pattern mixing at Jason Wu.

And I’m going! When I saw the Jamie Lidell show last summer, I was completely blown away by his spirited, jazzy, funky, high energy R&B electronica. It was seriously the most fun I’ve ever had at a show, what with all the crazy lighting and deejay tricks, and I can’t wait to see him again at Le Poisson Rouge at 158 Bleecker Street (West Village) tomorrow night (Saturday, Sept. 5). Click the image on the right for more info.

He’ll be performing a solo show, and Born Ruffians and Hundred in the Hands will also be playing at other times during the night.
