Deidre found a fabulous link where Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is reenacted by Peeps. The screenwriter reinterpreted the language and took some liberties with cutting the scenes, but overall a highly enjoyable series of photographs.

I only discovered this gem of a book a couple months ago: Daddy Long-Legs by Jean Webster, published circa 1912. The great thing about the fact that the book was written so long ago is that the copyright has now expired, and we can all read Daddy Long-Legs online for free!

In a nutshell, it’s the story of orphan Jerusha Abbott (what a hideous name… clearly not from recent years) and her transition from orphanage life to college, thanks to an anonymous benefactor who thinks she has potential to become an excellent writer. Jerusha must write him a letter each month in exchange for tuition, room & board, and a generous monthly allowance. She calls him “Daddy Long-Legs” because she has only seen him from the back once, and he refuses to reveal his true identity to her.
Jerusha is a witty and clever character, a little on the snarky side, rather shockingly (and amusingly) irreverent in her questions and hilarious in her observations and drawings. I can hardly believe that Jean Webster, a female author back in 1912, wrote Jerusha in such a way that with a name change and a few language tweaks, the story may well have taken place today.
Every once in a while, you read something on the Internet that is so exceptionally well-written that you cannot help but take notice. Re-read. Send. Tweet. Facebook. Whatever. It might not change your life, but for a moment, it makes you think and reevaluate the way you feel about something.
I felt that way today when I read Jenna Sauers’ big reveal on Jezebel.com. She is the no-longer-anonymous contributor Tatiana the Anonymous Model.
Models, with their perfect faces and flawless physiques, hold a certain allure in the hearts and eyes of many. What is life like when you’re really, really, ridiculously, good-looking? (Thank you, Derek Zoolander.) Like other non-models, I have told myself that I’m sure there isn’t much more to these gorgeous women than their looks, more out of resentment and petty jealousy than from any factual evidence. (I suppose watching the nitwit wannabes on America’s Next Top Model does not qualify as factual evidence; after all, Tyra has built a sizable business empire and Paulina Porizkova can speak six languages). Mean and little of me though it might be, and mostly on days when I’m feeling crappy about myself and the rest of the world, I’d see a model and think bitterly, “She’s pretty, but she’s got sh*t for brains. God giveth not with both hands, b*tches!” (more…)
